New Job Woes

by DIVERSANT on March 28, 2022

Starting a new job can bring a slew of emotions from excitement to nervousness to extreme happiness. But what happens if it all seems to be going in the wrong direction? We discuss different steps to consider if your new job isn’t panning out how you imagined.

Problem Solve

If your new job isn’t all you anticipated, figure out the issues before making any rash decisions. Determine if the problems are solvable such as tech problems or responsibilities being different than you thought. If you feel you can find a solution to the issue(s), seek assistance and remedy as soon as possible.

Partnership

Identifying a partner to help you navigate your new role and the company is essential for success. Teaming up with someone beyond your leader can help you understand the ins and outs and possibly solve any issue you might have as you are starting. Finding a partner within your team will likely yield the best results since they understand your job the best.

Goals

Set goals to try and feel things out before deciding to abandon ship. Goals can include:

  • Meeting a certain number of colleagues each week.
  • Inviting colleagues to lunch.
  • Completing specific tasks or projects within a defined timeline.

Creating such goals can help you understand the company better and develop relationships that can help you adjust to the company culture.

Recruiter

If a recruiter helped place you in your job, be sure to contact them as soon as you have any concerns regarding your role so they can assist you. They might be able to clarify any misgivings or speak with the hiring manager on your behalf to help solve any problems you might be experiencing. Be sure to keep your recruiter informed as they will be able to provide unbias feedback regarding your concerns.

Decision

After you have taken every step to attempt to make things work at your new job, you will need to decide how to move forward. If you find that after putting in the effort to make it work and nothing has changed, it may be time to make a quick decision and part ways. Otherwise, try to give your new company a chance and work to make it right for you.
